It’s very easy to say that you’ll exercise, but unless you set aside a specific time, it’s also very easy for that commitment to fall by the wayside. Bariatric surgery, the surgical reduction of stomach volume, has been performed for decades in the United States. The weight loss also reduces their risk for several diseases.

It seems like these loops could get very complex. When considering obesity and weight loss, there are so many influences to consider. Feedback is much more than just a number on a scale. Approval from people who notice a difference in the way we look or from people who acknowledge the positive changes we are making can go a long way toward changing how we see things. That in turn can cause a huge increase in motivation and how we behave. The flip side is when no one notices what you have been doing. It can be quite depressing and can kill one’s motivation. Unfortunately, in the case of folks with a lot of weight to lose, changes are often difficult to spot in the beginning, just when they need a boost the most.
